Elk City Lake Description

From Independence, 7 miles north on US 75, 4 miles west and 2 miles south on county road. Elk City Reservoir offers a wide variety of outdoor recreation and forms a lake featuring a shoreline nearly 50 miles long, containing over 4,500 acres of water and 12,000 acres of wildlife, in addition to the State Park. The prominent feature of the landscape is the precipitous limestone bluff known as Table Mound. In autumn, the native hardwoods bring an abundance of color to the area, as well. Opportunities include hunting, fishing, camping, boating, swimming, hiking and picnicking. Elk City Lake offers three attractive park areas open year round with picnicking and camping sites both with and without electricity. The parks also include swimming areas, boat launching ramps, water hydrants, sanitary facilities, showers, fireplaces, playgrounds and group shelters. Elk City Reservoir is located on the Elk River, a tributary of the Verdigris, in Montgomery County, Kansas, and offers good to excellent fishing opportunities for channel catfish, white bass, crappie, flathead catfish, largemouth bass and saugeye. Hook and line and trot line fisherman experience good success for channel catfish and flatheads in the reservoir during all seasons of the year. Spring fishing for spawning crappie occurs in the coves and associated streams. White bass runs also occur in Elk River. The outlet area provides good to excellent fishing during moderate releases. A handicap access fishing dock is located in the state park area. Angler access is permitted from April 1 through September 1 on the refuge area.

The Elk City Reservoir is a reservoir located 7 miles (11 km) east of Elk City, Kansas, the dam that forms the lake was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It has approximately 4,500 acres (18 km²) of water, and 12,000 acres (49 km²) of wildlife, and a total of over 50 miles (80 km) of shoreline. There are six hiking trails at the Elk City Reservoir, two of which are notable for receiving a National Trails designation. The scienic Elk River hiking trail is fifteen miles (24 km) long, and goes from the west edge of the dam to the bridge on Elk River.
