well a friend and i went to the lake about a week ago, the weather was nice it was in the low 60's with light winds, We wanted to go out because the forcast for the next week wasn't very nice and we were thinking that this might of been the only weekend left to take the boat out before winter. Well we fished in our area that we fished about 3 weeks ago and thought maybe the fish were shallow, well we were throwing spoons and jigs in to every weed bed and structure that we could find, we did this for about an hour without any bites. so we decided to fish over at rock city and fished about 20 feet down with jigs and spoons also We fished that deep because that is where we were showing fish on the sonar. well we once again didn't get anything and so we moved up to the spot where we first fished and kept fishing the weed beds. We finally managed to pull in about 4 fish, I caught 3 smallmouth bass and my friend caught 1 small mouth bass. Well it was getting late by this time since the sun goes down here fast with the time change and it was starting to cool down fast, we made a quick run up to the river because i wanted to check out our ice fishing spot with the boat and the fish finder and find what the depth was in that area in case i want to ice fish this year. It was a fun time even though we didn't catch much. I will give more updates if we decide to go ice fishing this year.

not as good as last weekend. But

Not as good of fishing as last weekend but still an okay day. a friend and i went to wilson lake last weekend, 9-24-11. we went out hoping to find maybe some walleye or striper. the weather was about 20 degrees warmer then the weekend before and so i think the fish scattered more. It took us a longer time to get into some fish. we fished the same areas as the week before and managed to catch some smallmouth bass first, but they were hard to find. we fished different area after not really catching anything on the south shore, so we tried the north side and hell creek area for about an hour or two without any luck, by this time it was getting about an hour or so from dark so we went back to the south shore and went farther back to the west, We were throwing slab spoons like the week before, well we were slowly working the south side in about 5 feet of water when my friend got a hit and pulled in a nice white bass. well about 10 minutes later he pulled in another white bass. well at this time i thought that he was going to catch all the fish and i wasn't going to catch any good keepers. well these are the only 2 keepers he caught. well by this time it was getting late and almost dark and i really didn't want to fish in the dark so i told him i was gonna make 1 or 2 more casts and then we will go. Well literally on my 1st cast i had something that hit my pole. I set the hook but it didn't budge, so at this time i thought that i got snagged. so i was yanking and pulling hard on the fishing rod at this time and couldn't get it to break loose, well i yanked again and felt something pull back so i knew i had a fish on. the problem was it had me in some weeds and it didn't want to budge. I tried not to pull to hard because i was only using ten pound test but i finally managed to get the fish out of the weeds and bring this thing up to the boat, my friend had the net ready to bring it in. Well we got the fish into the boat to find out that i had just caught a 26"- 5 pound channel cat. this was alright. well this was the end to our fishing trip so we loaded the boat and went home to clean some fish. Hoping to do it again this next week and hope to find some walleye and striper, but only time will tell.

fall fishing

Well the weather was overcast all day and the temperature was in the 60's. a friend and i had decided the night before to go fishing if it wasn't raining. I have missed out on late summer/fall fishing the last few years and really want to get out this year and do some since i know for the next month or so it can be an awesome time of year to fish. well we got to the lake at about 12:30pm and got the boat on the water by 1pm. there was an area i fished the weedend before and caught some small mouth bass but knew it could be holding other fish so we went to that area, The water temp was around 67 degrees, 10 degrees cooler than the week before so i was excited because i know this is a good temp for some fish. Well i put a silver weedless casting spoon on my line and my friend decided to put on a white jig with a pink jig head on it. We were fishing on the weedbeds and points all day. Well my first cast was toward the bank, i let the spoon sink for about a second and started reeling in and then bam i got a hit. I pulled in the first fish of the day on my first cast. It was a small striper about a pound or so, fun to catch but not big enough to keep. Well i kept throwing the spoon and caught a small mouth bass, moved the boat along the shoreline at a slow pace and kept casting and came into a cove and threw out my spoon. before long i had another hit. it was a 16" walleye, it was a keeper so i put him in the livewell. well kept on fishing and caught a nice keeper white bass. well about an hours or so passed and i had about 5-6 fish caught but nothing for the friend of mine. so i told him he might want to get rid of that jig and put on a spoon, he agreed so i gave him a gold castmaster spoon to use since he didn't have any. Well it probably wasn't more then 5 minutes after he put it on he had caught a nice keeper white bass. well we continued to catch small mouth bass all day. well it was getting later in the day but still catching some fish. well we moved to another spot and was working our way along when my friend yelled out, would you look at that. and so i looked over to my right and what i saw was a bunch of shad busting the surface, there were fish in the bunch attacking them. I had just gotten done eating a sandwich so i quickly grabbed my pole and casted directly into the shad and instantly caught a nice keeper white bass, at about the same time my friend also casted into them and also pulled in a white bass. I made one more cast into them and hooked another one by this time the shad were starting to dissappear, well i was unhooking my fish and before i knew it my pole somehow flipped over the edge of the boat and before i could grab it, my rod, reel went into the lake in about 6-7 foot of water, Now luckily this was not an expensive set up because i never did get it back. but anyway the shad were gone and we managed to land 3 nice size white bass out of them. Welll by this time it was getting late and cool and the bite pretty much quit so we loaded up the boat and went home, we managed to keep 5 white bass and 1 walleye. so it was a very good day of fishing, hopefully will be going out there again soon.

Webster lake

Well it was a hot one here in kansas again. Temps were in the low 100's and the humidity of course was high. So a buddy, his son and I wanted to go fishing but did not want to sweat our butts off doing it, so we decided to go out in the evening and fish into the night. We got to Webster probably around 5pm and got on the water around 5:30 or so after buying bait and getting the boat launched. we wanted to troll for some white bass and wiper and so this is how we started fishing. well my friend put a small silver rattle trap on his sons pole and another kind on his. me i fished with a new reef runner that was like a firetiger color. well after about 15 minutes trolling my friend caught the first fish. it was a nice white bass. We got excited and thought alright now they will continue to bite. well i marked the first spot on my gps unit and continued to troll through that spot again and my friends son got a hit. he was reeling it in and it got off right at the boat. We thought that is okay we will come across more. well we trolled for awhile and were chasing surfacing fish and trying to keep up with them. we didn't seem to get into them much they were kinda scattered. well trolling didn't work for awhile so we decided to put on some live bait(minnows) and do some drifting since it was windy enough to do so. Well i have never ever not caught a fish drifting until tonight. For some reason the fish didn't want live bait so after about an hour or so we went back to trolling and my friends son once again missed a nice hit. ( He was screwing around and not paying attention. Young kids what can you do). well after about 30 minutes of trolling my pole clicker starts singing to me. I finally got a hit. It was also a nice white bass. so at this point we only had 2 white bass in the livewell but should have had more. but by this time it was getting dark so we decided to try live bait for some catfish. but after several hours of no luck we just loaded the boat and went home. even though we didn't catch many fish it was still a fun night in the great outdoors and on the water, plus i got to put more hours on my boat motor since it is new and i am still trying to get the motor broke in.

cedar bluff

Well went out to the lake with a friend and his kids on Sunday May 22, 2011 in the mid afternoon, He had his boat at cedar bluff worked on and wanted to try it before bringing it home. well we got the boat in the water and headed to the main part of the lake. the boat idled well, which is what the problem before was. (it wouldn't idle). well the guy at the boat shop got it idling pretty good. well the boat ran well all afternoon. it ran about 42 mph at W.O.T. and idled at about 1m.p.h so we started trolling. we used different baits to troll, some of us used deep diving cranks and some shallow cranks. the shallow crankbait seemed to get all the hits for awhile catching the first fish. it was a fairly nice white bass that his daughter and son both shared the catch. then it got about 2 to 3 more hits but his daughter missed them. well we trolled for about an hour more with no luck. so we came across a drop off that was showing a bunch of fish on the backside of it. so we tied off to a tree. well we fished that area for the rest of the evening and came away with 2 bluegill, 2 nice crappie, and of course one carp which was not kept. it was a good fun night and the weather was perfect. Looking for the next time we can go out and enjoy some more fishing.

breaking in motor on new boat

well it finally happened, we had some beautiful weather here in central kansas, so i took my wife, daughter and dog and went to Wilson lake and put about 3 hours or so on my new boat and motor. the break in time for it is 10 hours so i still have some more to go but at least i got some hours on it and had enough to open it up full throttle to see how the boat would run. You can only leave it full throttle for no more then 5 minutes but the boat will top out at about 40m.p.h. which i don;t think is too bad for a 17' deep v boat with 3 persons and gear on the boat. not to mention 22 gals of fuel. so it was a great time and the boat ran well and for the most part kept us pretty dry, just a little spray over the sides of the boat now and again.

Wilson 2011

Well What can i say. I finally got my new boat yesterday. May 13th. The boat wasn't rigged up with a trolling motor and fish finder so i had to spend many hours in the garage getting it ready for the lake. Well i can honestly say Saturday the 14th was not really the best day to go to the lake especially with the wife and a dog who have never been on a boat. The reason i say this is because the wind of course here in kansas was gusting to 30+ mph again. We got to lake wilson and while their was a walleye tournament going on we decided to launch anyway. Well got the boat on the water and i knew right away it was going to be a short trip for several reasons. I mentioned the dog and my wife earlier. those are the two reasons. The look wasn't good and i knew my wife had her doubts. and the dog was whining like a bad bearing about to go out. plus with our boat being brand new the motor was not broke in and didn't really want to push it to hard for the first 20 hours according to the manufacture recommendations. So we loaded up the boat and went home. we will of course try to go out again in a few days or so. My fishing trips always start out crappy and adventures but for once would like it to start out great and continue that way. but oh well it will get better.

Webster lake

went out with a friend on Friday April 8th to webster to try and catch some walleye. We were told that walleye were being caught trolling along the dam on crankbaits and jigs and so we gave this a try for several hours with no luck. lots of other boats and fisherman out but didn't see them pulling anything in either. We just figured it was a little early for them to show up on the damn. it was around 3:00 pm so we decided to fish in deeper water just west of the damn. after awhile of trolling my friend pulls in a nice White bass probably close to 2 pounds. we trolled another hour with no luck. we stayed in the same area and i also caught a fish trolling i at first thought it was a drum but got the fish in the boat and saw that it was a rainbow trout. that was kind of cool since i have never caught a trout in the main part of the lake while trolling a walleye rig with a worm on it. These were the only 2 fish we caught but still had fun. we didn't stay for the evening walleye fishing because it just got way too windy to hold the boat in the area we wanted to.

Wilson, March 19, 2011

Well finally a friend and i got to take the boat out for the first time since winter has gone. Although it was only for a few hours. We really shouldn't have went, the weather was cold, windy, cloudy and had a 40 percent chance for thunderstorms, but we both were tired of waiting for decent weather. cabin fever had definately set in. Well we get to the lake and get the boat unhooked and get it in the water after talking with one guy at the boat ramp who was leaving. we asked him if he had any luck and he told us not really. just one fish early in the morning. It was 5pm when we talked to him. but he did catch about a 5 pound channel and told us where at. so we decided to try that first. well we fished that area for about 30-45 minutes, we would have fished it longer but headed back to the boat ramp to load it up since the area we were fishing had started to get some lightning flashes near us. Well we weren't the only ones loading up. Well after that we were just going to go and fish the other side of the lake since it was clear on the northeast side of the lake. so we decided to just load and drive to the other side of the lake since it is quicker since my boat is not that fast. We knew that the walleye were coming into prestage for the spawn so we decided to fish the dam and area off of the dam to see about hitting some walleye. the water temp was only 40.1 degrees. the water was extremely clear. We fished it for about 1 and a half hours without a single bite. so we decided it was enough. and since it was about 8:30 or so the light was disappearing and the wind was blowing even harder and the temp had dropped to about 30 degrees and we were not dressed real warm so we just came home. Of course with no fish. but that is o.k. there will another day.
